There’s a saying that goes, “Offense gets the glory, but defense wins games.” As a top defenseman on outstanding Washington College men’s lacrosse teams, Scott McGilvray won a lot of games, but also got his share of glory.

As a freshman in 1996, Scott scooped up 33 ground balls for the Shoremen as they won their first Centennial Conference Championship and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division III Championship Game. The following season, Scott was named to the All-Centennial Conference second team and the All-America third team, finishing the season with a team-leading 74 ground balls to go along with two goals and one assist. The Shoremen again won the Centennial Conference Championship and again advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Game.

It was during Scott’s junior year that the Shoremen would ultimately capture what had long eluded them as they won the 1998 NCAA Division III Championship. Despite missing seven games that season, Scott still tallied 39 ground balls on the year and was so highly regarded that he landed on the All-America second team and All-Centennial Conference second team.

Scott finished his career as a team captain with a 38-ground ball, one-assist season in 1999. He was named to the All-America second team for the second year in a row and the All-Centennial Conference first team for the first time. He was also chosen for the prestigious North-South Senior All-Star Game.

Over the course of Scott’s collegiate career, the Shoremen posted an impressive won-loss record of 53-16. In 52 of those 69 games, Washington’s defense held its opponent to under 10 goals.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Scott C. McGilvray into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 13th day of October, 2012.
