Bob Lipsitz came to Washington College in 1950 from Baltimore City College where he was varsity lacrosse player.
Bob did not begin his lacrosse career at Washington College as a starter but once he earned a starting nod in 1952, he was off and running. As an attackman in 1952, he scored 24 goals and 5 assists in a 13-game schedule. The following season he poured in 33 goals then finished up his collegiate career in 1954 with 28 goals in a 10-game schedule. In 1954 Washington College finished undefeated in the Laurie Cox Division of collegiate lacrosse and was declared national co-champion, with Syracus University, of this division. Bob served as co-captain of that championship team which finished with an overall record of 8-2, losing only to Navy and the strong Mt. Washington Club Lacrosse Team. On the basis of the point system used in 1954 to determine team rankings, Washington College was ranked fifth nationally, along with Princeton and Syracuse.
Against some of the most outstanding competition in collegiate lacrosse, Washington College was considered one of the best in the early 50’s, and Bob Lipsitz performed admirably at crease attack during this era. On the basis of his play he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1954 and was selected to compete in the Annual North-South Game. Earlier in his career, in 1952, he was also selected to compete in the U.S. Lacrosse Coaches Association’s Lacrosse Bowl Game held in West Palm Beach, FL.
As a student, Bob was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and he has been active in alumni affairs, serving as the president of the Washington College Alumni Association from 1989-91.
Bob received his law degree from the University of Baltimore Law School in 1963. He served as a Program Analyst for the Department of Defense until his recent retirement.
It is an honor and pleasure for Washington College to induct Robert W. Lipsitz into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame on this 3rd day of October 1998.
