Eddie McMahan grew up in Chestertown and went on to athletic stardom at Washington College, despite his size. He gave his life in World War II on Okinawa.

Small, but game, he held Washington College’s mile and 2-mile records for almost 30 years. With Gibby Young and Basil “Tut” Tully, he brought great distinction to Washington College in track in the late 1930’s, also competing in the 440 and 880, often capturing three or more first places. It was said he never lost a second time to a runner who once beat him.

A good basketball player he played on Tom Kibler’s strong teams of the 1935-39 period.
