A three-sport athlete at Washington, Elton Louis “Ace” Wilmot excelled particularly in football and basketball, earning letters all four years in both sports. He also played baseball his freshman year.
Wilmot, of Waterbury, Connecticut, helped guide the Shoremen cagers to a sparkling 49-26 record during his four-year hardwood tenure, capped by an impressive 15-6 campaign during his senior season. He was described in the 1938 Pegasus this way: “Never high scorer, never flashy, never seeking individual honors or praise, Ace stands out as the most valuable man on this team. For four years he has been consistently good; never has he turned in a poor performance. His spirit of cooperation, and his efforts for greater teamwork have been responsible for many of the scoring honors and grandstand plays for which his teammates received credit. He will be the most difficult man to replace.”
Wilmot was class president for two years, a member of Alpha Kappa, Kappa Alpha, the Silver Pentagon Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Student Council, Le Circle Francais, and the Varsity Club. He was awarded a Meritorious Scholarship in 1937, and the following year was in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
After graduating from Washington College, Wilmot worked for the American Brass Company in Waterbury, CT, which was purchased by Anaconda Corporation before becoming part of Atlantic Richfield. Wilmot became Assistant Sales Manager in fabricated metals and retained that position until his retirement.
Washington College is proud to induct Elton Louis Wilmot into the Athletic Hall of Fame this 18th day of October, 1991.
