George Atterbury overcame a mid-career injury to put together an outstanding collegiate lacrosse career.

A midfielder, George arrived at Washington College in the fall of 1992 and spent his first two seasons on the stacked Washington College men’s lacrosse teams of the mid-1990s in a somewhat limited role offensively as the Shoremen advanaced to the 1993 NCAA Division III Semifinals and the 1994 NCAA Divisdion III Quarterfinals.  An injury sidelined him early in the 1995 season and he was granted a medical redshirt to maintain two more years of eligibility.

When George returned to the field for the 1996 season, he emerged as one of the team’s top players, scoring 23 goals, registering 10 assists, and scooping up 46 ground balls en route to All-America first-team and All-Centennial Conference first-team honors. The Shoremen captured their first Centennial Conference Championship that season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship game.

For his final season in 1997, George put up career highs of 32 goals and 51 ground balls to go along with seven assists. He was once again named to the All-America and All-Centennial first teams. The Shoremen repeated as Centennial Conference Champions and returned to the NCAA Division III Championship game. He scored three goals in both of his NCAA Championship game appearances.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct George Atterbury into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 6th day of October, 2018.
