In the 21st century, the number of collegiate student-athletes who play four years of two sports has grown increasingly rare. Those who complete Hall of Fame worthy careers in both of those sports are truly exceptional. Laura Scimeca did exactly that during her four years playing both field hockey and softball at Washington College.
In field hockey, Laura was a three-time All-Centennial Conference first-team selection, a three-time All-Region first-team selection, a 2004 North-South Senior All-Star, and a WomensFieldHockey.com All-American. In softball, she was a three-time All-Centennial Conference selection, earning first-team honors as a senior.
Laura holds the school field hockey records for career points with 131 and career goals with 58. Her 18 goals in 2002 set a new single-season school record that she promptly tied the very next season. Laura also holds the school softball records for single-season home runs (eight, in 2004) and career triples with 12 and shares the career home-run record with 16. She also ranks second in school softball history in slugging percentage at .586 and in stolen bases with 35. Her 81 career RBI rank her fifth all-time at the College.
Laura helped lead the field hockey team to three Centennial Conference Tournament berths in four years, including the top seed and a spot in the ECAC Tournament in 2001. As a senior on the softball field, she led the Shorewomen to their first-ever Centennial Conference Tournament berth in 2005.
A team captain in both sports, Laura was the female winner of both the Senior Athletic Award and the Sho’men Club Award in 2005.
Following her playing career, Laura stayed at the College and spent time as an assistant coach for both sports, earning a Masters degree from the school. That experience served her well; she is currently the head varsity softball and assistant varsity field hockey coach at Norfolk Academy.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Laura Scimeca Gibson into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 1st day of October, 2016.
