Washington College

As a student at West Genesee High School, Steve Beville was an outstanding performer in basketball and lacrosse. His high school lacrosse team compiled a 45 win-1 loss record and won the 1981 New York State Championship. He was unanimously selected to the all-league team. In basketball, he was selected three times to the all-league and his team won the OHSL North championship title two years.

Steve Beville anchored an outstanding lacrosse defense during his four years at Washington College. From his freshmen year to the end of his senior year, he started every lacrosse game. These teams accumulated a total record of 47 wins and only 17 losses, and participated in four NCAA Tournaments, reaching the finals in three of these four years.

In recognition of his outstanding defensive play he was selected to the first NCAA All-American Division III team in 1984 and 1985. He was also selected as the Outstanding Defenseman of the Nation in both 1984 and 1985. His teammates voted him the Most Valuable Player in 1985.

After graduation, Steve remained at Washington College as an assistant coach to Coach Terry Corcoran for two years. In 1989, he was appointed head lacrosse coach at Colorado College. Under his tutelage, Colorado won three league titles and notably defeated the US Air Force Academy three times. During his tenure as Colorado’s coach, his team won 100 games and lost only 49. His post-college playing career included being a candidate for the 1986 and 1990 USA teams and he was selected six times as captain for Team Colorado All-Stars. He is presently the lacrosse coach at the University of Vermont.

Steve graduated from Washington College with a major in American studies. He earned his master’s degree at the University of North Colorado in athletic administration.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Steve Beville into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 5th day of October, 2002.
