The late Roger Lee Smoot, Jr., was a standout soccer player at Washington College and a four-year member of the baseball team. He becomes the first third-generation Washington College Hall of Fame inductee. Both his father, Roger Smoot, Sr., and his grandfather, Homer Smoot, are members of the Hall of Fame.

While serving as a soccer co-captain in 1955, Roger was named an All-South All-American and picked up National All-America honorable mention. The previous year, he scored a team-best 11 goals en route to his second consecutive All-South All-American honor. He was also a three-time All Mason-Dixon Conference selection and a 1955 All Middle-Atlantic Conference first-team choice.

With Roger on the team, the Shoremen posted a record of 21-11-10 over four seasons. The 1954 team, with Roger as its leading goal-scorer, finished with a 7-3-2 record and defeated Drexel, 1-0, to win the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship.

In baseball, Roger helped the Shoremen to a 45-23-1 record over four years. In the spring of 1955, just months after the soccer team had claimed the MAC title, the baseball team went 15-5 to establish what was then a new school record for wins in a season.

Roger’s father, who played both baseball and football at the College, graduated in 1927 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. His grandfather, Homer, played baseball at the College in the late 19th century before embarking on a professional playing career. Homer was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Roger Lee Smoot, Jr., into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 1st day of October, 2016.
