Heralded as an outstanding basketball prospect when he arrived at Washington College, Dick Callahan played up to his promise in the cage sport, and added a fine lacrosse career.
In basketball he was not only a top offensive threat, scoring over 1,000 points, but he was a great defensive player. He guarded the opposition’s leading offensive threat, where his height, quickness and anticipation were great strengths.
He was named to the All-Maryland and all Mason-Dixon Conference during the 1958-59 and 1959-60 seasons. He was named by his teammates most valuable player three straight years and was co-captain his junior and senior years.
He picked up lacrosse while at Washington College and his natural abilities sent him to the top. In 1958 he teamed with Joe Sieved and Mickey DiMaggio, both Hall of Fame members, to form Don Kelly’s unforgettable “60 minute midfield.” So named by Baltimore Sun Sports Editor Bill Tanton, they scored a total of 93 of the Shore ten’s 126 goals during a 7-3 season that included a 16-to-6 thrashing of the University of Virginia.
Dick Callahan was named to the USILA All-American squad in 1958 and 1959 seasons he was also elected co-captain. An injury sidelined his senior season.
He was active in College life, serving as Senior Class president and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
He has remained active in athletics and serves the City of Annapolis as Director of Parks and Recreation.
